What is included in that price?
A quote for opening a door may cover a very different request from replacing its lock. A fob price may be for a part, programming or a finished working key. The scope needs to be clear.
Put the requested result into words
For a lockout, say whether the key is inside, missing or broken. Opening the door may be all you want. Changing which key works afterward is another decision.
For a home or business key change, count the locks rather than just the doors. Include separate deadbolts, side entrances and the number of new copies needed. Different hardware may affect whether the locks can use one key.
For a vehicle, give the year, make and model and whether any key still starts it. Adding a spare and replacing every lost key are not the same starting point.
Ask about the visit, work and parts
A useful estimate should make clear what the service visit includes, which work is proposed and whether parts are included. Ask about any applicable travel or after-hours charge.
For a car key, check the fob or key part, blade cutting, electronic programming and agreed functions. A remote that only opens doors is not necessarily the same product as a key that starts the car.
For garage service, a control fault and a moving-door fault may involve different work. Support for the actual model and components should be checked rather than assumed from a broad service name.
Some details need to be seen
Wear, damage, door fit or an unsuitable part can affect the work once the hardware is checked. That does not make every possible change part of the original request.
The proposed change and its price should be explained before you agree. Keep a simple distinction between access, repair, rekeying and replacement so you understand what each item is meant to achieve.
California's consumer guidance for hiring a locksmith recommends discussing an estimate and keeping an itemized receipt. Use current official licensing information when checking a provider; a low advertised starting price is not a credential.
Try the result and keep the record
Use the door or key normally once the work is complete. Test the functions included in a vehicle-key job. Point out anything that still catches while the hardware or car is there to check.
Keep a receipt showing the business details, parts, services and full amount charged. Ask which warranty terms apply to supplied parts and work. The right price is tied to the work agreed for your door, lock or vehicle.
